About
Karen is an artist and photographer in Bellevue, Washington. She began her photographic career as a photojournalist for the daily Colorado Springs Sun. Moving on to Washington, D.C., she was chief photo editor for the Television division at the National Geographic Society. Bill Gates’ privately held Corbis Corp. hired her in the 1990s to lead the photo editing team that built the world’s first digital image company.

During that time Karen produced stock photography that was widely published, including for The Wall Street Journal, Smithsonian magazine, Lonely Planet guides, Macmillan publishing, and many others. Her broad background in the photo industry includes photo editing and research assignments for government, private sector, and start-ups, including the former U.S. Information Agency, the Smithsonian's National Museum of African Art, National Geographic Books, National Wildlife magazine, U.S. News and World Report, Vanity Fair and others, as well as key management positions at Fortune 500 companies such as Nordstrom where she worked in ecommerce marketing operations.

Karen co-produced and co-led an Explorer's Club flag expedition to Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands that documented impacted cultures, based on the 1920s-era journey of two American women who painted and wrote about what they feared were vanishing traditions. She is the former West Coast chapter president for the American Society of Picture Professionals and a former board member of Seattle-based non-profit Youth in Focus. Karen is a former Fellow National of The Explorers Club and was a member in good standing of the National Press Photographers Association (NPPA) from 1976 to 2019.

Awards include the Explorers Club Scott Pearlman Field Award for Science and Exploration, the Nell Shipman post-production award for documentary film, a Seattle Best in Show for associate interactive producer and a Washington state arts commission grant. Karen earned a B.A. in Anthropology from Colorado College. She currently practices painting, drawing, and photography from her home in the Pacific Northwest.
